This event will be held in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation. Global Citizen has hosted festivals in New York City, US Mumbai, India and Hamburg, Germany. The Festival and activities leading up to it will have a special focus, among other issues, on menstrual hygiene and ending open defecation. In honor of the late Nelson Mandela's life and call to end extreme poverty, the Global Citizen’s campaign aims to rally US$1 billion in new commitments, with US$500 million of that set to impact the lives of 20 million women and girls worldwide.

The Mandela 100 Festival will be the capstone event of Global Citizen’s year-long 'Be the Generation' campaign focused on achieving the Global Goals on ending poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and life below water.
